Coal
Miners in China. This reportage is about coal miners in South
West China. The mine belongs to the village, whose men work there
and in their fields. There is no ventilation underground, and it
is impossible to stand upright anywhere. The coal is transported
in small baskets by hand.
Portraits
of Members of the Miao Minority. These portraits show inhabitants
of a village of the Miao minority near Kaili in South West China.
The village can only be reached on foot. It was up to the villagers
to decide what to wear, and whether they wanted to be photographed
alone or with friends or family.
India,
Jodhpur, the Blue City. Jodhpur, also known as the blue city,
is the second largest city in the Indian state of Rajasthan. The
photos of this series have all been taken around the Mehrangarh
Fort. They capture the magic of the indigo blue color of the houses.
The White Widows of Vrindavan.
In traditional areas of India, women whose husbands die, loose all
legal rights. They are even encouraged to commit suicide. To escape
this fate, many seek refuge in Vrindavan. Krishna, the god of infinite
love lived there, and pilgrims are very generous.
Berber People, Atlas Mountains Morocco. Shouts from “free men’s material culture” living out of livestock and agriculture, between rocky deserts and green mountains. In the endless running after springs of drinking water, the nomad soul of tents also vibrate in courts’ life of stancial forms.

in a Village of the Miao Minority, China. Every 13 years
on the third day of the third moon a special festival is celebrated
in the area of Kaili in the Guizhou province. Pigs are butchered,
there are bullfights, dancing, singing, games and banquets, and
sacrificial offerings are made to ancestors.
Miners
in the Ruhr District of Germany. This reportage presents
portraits of miners of one of the coal mines in the Ruhr district
of Germany. It shows them at work, entering the mines, preparing
for work, changing shifts, and leaving for home.
Kumbh
Mela 2001, Allahabad, India. The Kumbh Mela is a Hindu pilgrimage
that takes place every 12 years. Its date is determined by the position
of the stars. During the last Kumbh Mela in Allahabad in 2001, around
70 million people purified their inner selves through holy bathing
rituals in the Ganges.
Orthodox Jews in New York.
This documentary report shows scenes of everyday life among Orthodox
Jews in Borough Park, Brooklyn, home to one of the largest Orthodox
Jewish communities outside of Israel. For this report the photographer
won the coveted Nikon Photo Contest International Award.
